THE
LEADERSHIP IMPERATIVE
I
guess that leadership has been actively sought as the answer to
every corporate crisis since time began - but seemingly never more
so than today.
And
yet the investment in so-called leadership training in the past
two decades has probably never been higher. Is it that the more
we get - the more we need? ... like an addiction ... are we addicted
to the notion of leadership?
Or
is it just another cry for help? and a simple "catch all" to resolve
a vast array of issues and pressures felt by people everywhere...?
How many people have said "something is still missing even after
all our investment in change initiatives in recent years!"
Let's
be clear - when real leadership is in place - you know it: you can
feel it and it really makes a difference!
One
fact seems to stand above everything else. The cry for leadership
comes from those seeking others to provide a sense
of purpose and direction: largely due to the vacuum they see those
others creating.
So
how do we fill that void? By demanding leadership from those who
somehow failed to provide the lead in the past - as though extolling
the need will somehow bring about a radical change?! Or by asking
those who are demanding leadership to design a process
for developing the skills and abilities in others - when many have
previously avoided the issue by talking not acting?!
And
what is the usual result? A series of leadership courses, workshops
seminars and away-days, on and off the job, designed on defined
"competencies" - yet aimed to create inspiration, commitment and
drive energy and results! (and when presenters sometimes deliver
that outcome - those who designed the events seem to regard them
as shallow or superficial)!
When
are we going to learn that to develop inspirational results-oriented
people - we need to expose them to inspirational results-oriented
events - and to the failure as well as success that long-term achievement
is really built upon!
Such
an approach exists. It's the "Leadership Imperative". Well researched,
well developed and highly applicable. The "Leadership Imperative"
delivers results: better performance and real leadership at every
level.
Like
it or not, there are very few Sam Waltons', Stelios Haji-Ioannous'
or Charles Dunstones' running organisations - so better get better
at leading ourselves!
